Get To know A&J Bakery
A&J bakery is locally owned and operated in Cranston, RI. They have grown and changed a great deal since the creation of the bakery. In the beginning, they were a very small 1000 sq. ft. facility, with a one person staff plus the two owners, who both worked other jobs while pursuing their dream of establishing A & J. At the time, their son Kamden, was one year old when the doors opened in 2007. In the beginning, they only specialized in “Nut Free”. Since then, they have grown in leaps and bounds! In 2009 the bakery decided to expand their specialties to include, ALL products to be “Nut & Gluten Free”. In addition, some products also are available in a combination of “Dairy, Egg, or Soy Free” as well. Because Amy and Joe made prevention of cross contamination their main priority, A&J became a dedicated Nut an Gluten Free Facility. Both have always prided themselves with the safety and complete satisfaction of their customers. Their 2012 expansion has rewarded them with a much larger store front and the need for more employees!
They have slightly changed what they do but only to better support their customers’ needs. With this new expansion they will be making prepared foods for their nut and gluten free customers to take home and bake or just heat up. They are making a variety of savory dishes to add to the prepared foods from eggplant parmesan to ready to bake topped pizzas. These are just a few of the items that will be available now.
A&J Bakery makes a variety of items that are now all allergen friendly to help the increasing of customer’s needs, from the Allergen Friendly gingerbread House kits to some allergen friendly sugar cookies. They have not abandoned the concept they started with which was to be a dedicated nut free bakery. They simply added to the list of allergens to be concerned with. All of the changes that have been made over the five years are a result of feedback that Amy and Joe have gotten from their customers. Acknowledging and responding to customer input is an important quality that the bakery owners have. They appreciate any positive or negative feedback and may change recipes for the customers overall needs.
Amy and Joe Hitzemann and their staff at A&J Bakery would like to thank all of their customers and family that have been with them for all of these years. The loyalty that the customers have shown Amy and Joe over the years is the reason they keep going forward today. If it was not for the loyal, diehard customers that continue to come from all over New England and other parts of the USA for their products, Amy and Joe would have had to close years ago. Many of you have been here for the struggles and the accomplishments they have had over the five years. Amy is a school teacher during the day at Davies Career and Technical High School in Lincoln, RI and Joe is the head baker at the bakery during the day. Joe tries to meet the needs of each and every customer when possible. Joe’s dedication is one that is not seen much in the world today. The love he has for baking and his customers keeps Joe going on a daily basis. On any given day, you can stop by and the man waiting on you may be Joe or you may see him walk by like “a man on a mission” to get a new bakery item out to his customers.
